You’re planning a party, right? I’m sure you want to make it special. I’d like to tell you about an extraordinary party that took place a few years ago. But first, I’d like to ask you a quick question. When’s the last time you went to a birthday party and felt excited, really excited? Like you had so much fun that you didn’t want to leave? Oct. 18, 2000, I was at a birthday party that made me feel all that and more - my own. Several of my women friends got together and threw me a “creative bash.” I wish you could have seen us. There we were a group of middle aged women, ages 30’s to 50's, having the time of our lives.
We did creative activities with our minds, our hands and our bodies. Sometimes we laughed so hard it brought tears and other times we were touched to the point of tears. Some of us didn’t know each other and some of us did, but by the time the evening ended we all felt really close in a new way. I even got to see wonderful new sides of my old friends.
And the whole time, we didn’t talk about work, or partners or kids or money or health problems.
The best gift I got that night by far (and there were some pretty great ones) was the celebration itself. That night was filled with such magic that we decided to continue partying once a season and celebrate each other’s birthdays in totally unique ways. We call ourselves the Women’s Birthday Club.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a group of just women or mixed. It doesn’t even matter if you’re celebrating a birthday or another special event. Here’s the thing that really sums it up- while we were at a retreat five years after the start of our first party, one of the women turned to another and said, what is it you do for a living? Can you imagine that? After five years of partying, this woman didn’t know the answer to the number one question people ask each other at parties, because that isn’t what we spend our times talking about. I’m not saying work and partners and parents and kids aren’t important or don’t count. It that we count just as much in our own right and that’s the part that too often gets ignored in the rush of living our lives. Between parties I talk with my friends, and that’s great, but we rarely go out and play as adults. I’ve discovered something, dare I say it, holy in playing together because through our creative celebration we connect to the unfamiliar or forgotten parts of ourselves and we end up more whole.
